Eye/Opthalmology
Ophthalmologists are doctors who treat patients with diseases or injuries of the eye. They have completed medical school and additional specialty training and are board certified (meaning they passed special exams) in ophthalmology (care of the eye). Common eye problems facing older adults are cataracts and macular degeneration, among others. Individuals with diabetes may develop diabetic retinopathy, which affects the retina of the eye. These types of conditions can result in damaged vision or eventual blindness. Patients who notice changes in their vision should seek medical help as many eye diseases can be treated, or their progress slowed, by proper medical care. While Medicare doesn't usually pay for eye glasses due to slight changes in vision, Medicare and Medicare supplements may pay for eye exams, testing and treatment for diseases or injury to the eye (such as cataract removal).
