Senior Housing Locators

A senior housing locator is an individual or company that will help you find a senior residence that offers the right level of services for you or your loved one. If you know what level of care residence you need (independent living, assisted living, dementia care, skilled nursing care, etc.,) a senior housing locator can search for available apartments or beds for you. The locator's services are typically paid for by the residences and not by the individuals or families asking for assistance; this is mostly good and slightly bad. This is a helpful, time-saving and free service for you (ask up front to be sure who pays for the service), but it also means that, quite logically, the locator service is likely to recommend one of the facilities with whom it works regularly. As long as the locator works with a large number of residences, the odds of the locator finding a good fit for you are high. Conversely, if your locator service only has a handful of residence clients, you may be offered only a limited choice and may want to do some additional searching on your own. Senior housing locators can be extremely helpful in explaining the types of services, and the levels of health care, offered by different types of residences, and in comparing one residence to another. They can help you compare prices and can help you find what is available in the area of the metro you desire. Some senior housing locators will even take you to visit residences, usually with no charge to you. Because the housing locators know staff and procedures at the various available residences, they can often streamline the application process for you as well. Particularly if you are trying to find a residence for a loved one long distance, a senior housing locator can make your search much easier since the service can do the leg work for you and provide you with available options in a very short period of time. While senior housing locators are often quite knowledgeable about the health care needs of older adults, please do not confuse senior housing locators with geriatric care managers. Care managers help you assess what care is needed; housing locators help you find that care once you know what type of care you need.
