Attorneys

An attorney in the United States (also called a lawyer) is an individual who has received a bachelor's degree from a college, has then completed three years of graduate training at an accredited law school, has passed the bar exam in his or her state and has then been admitted to practice law there. Today, most attorneys choose to practice in specific areas of the law, rather than trying to master all fields. Much like medicine, where podiatrists (foot doctors) and neurosurgeons (brain surgeons) have basic elements of the medical practice in common, but also differ dramatically in their specialties, attorneys have found it helpful to focus on specific types of law in order to better serve their clients. Examples of attorneys who spend a significant portion of their practice assisting older adults and their families include attorneys who focus on elder law, estate planning, probate and Social Security.
