Hospitals

The DFW metro region is fortunate to have many excellent hospitals serving our community. Just as many doctors have begun to specialize, some hospitals now specialize as well in the type of care they deliver. The hospitals we have historically thought of as hospitals, those that generally provide emergency services, maternity services (for childbirth and new babies), cardiac (heart) care, internal medicine, oncology (cancer) services, pediatric (for children) care and many others, are now referred to as "acute" care hospitals. Patients are usually, but not always, admitted to the hospital to receive care; some services are provided to out-patients. A newer breed of hospitals that provides a very intense level of medical care, but that focuses on patients with long-term chronic conditions, is the long-term acute care hospital (LTAC). Psychiatric care and chemical dependency concerns are the primary focus of mental health hospitals. Helping patients recover from an injury, lengthy illness, stroke or other debilitating illness is the goal of rehabilitation hospitals, which use the latest in physical, occupational, speech and cognitive therapies to help patients regain function. To learn more about these specific types of hospitals, please see the related subsections under this category on our site.
