The Alzheimer's Association is dedicated to providing support and assistance to persons affected by Alzheimer's disease and to their families and other caregivers through the Chapter's core services. The Dallas Chapter provides a wide range of programs, including care giver classes, educational programs, support groups, care consultations, referral lists, Safe Return, early-stage programs, a respite program and professional training. The Alzheimer's Association Helpline, 1-800-272-3900, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our professional staff is dedicated to helping people navigate through the difficult decisions and uncertainties people with Alzheimer's and their families face at every stage of the disease. We offer services in English and Spanish.

Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind

Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind assists individuals with visual challenges.  They offer the following programs for older adults with vision needs:

 

  • In-Home Assessment and Training for Seniors

  • Orientation and Mobility

  • Serving our Seniors (SOS) - one-on-one free assessments giving free assistive aids to older adults.

     

While the Dallas Lighthouse is located in Dallas, it serves residents of Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman, Navorr and Rockwall counties.

Deaf Action Center has been serving the DFW metroplex for over 30 years, offering the most comprehensive range of programs and services available to the deaf and hard of hearing community, many services free of charge.

Hours:  Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  (closed on holidays)

For deaf seniors 55 and older, we offer:

  • Transportation services for seniors who want to participate in our programs, as well as for activities, lunch and a weekly run to the local grocery store and pharmacy.
  • Well-balanced, nutritious lunches, offering seniors an opportunity to share a meal and fellowship with others.
  • Activities, trips and social events are creatively designed to meet the needs and interests of a growing and active adult population.

For late-deafened or hard of hearing seniors, whatever their level of hearing loss, we offer:

  • Free one-on-one hearing loss consultation with a Hearing Loss Resource Specialist, who will evaluate the senior's personal needs and provide the best possible solution.  Consultations may be held in-office or in private homes for those unable to travel.
  • Amplified telephones and other assistive products free of charge to anyone who has a hearing, vision, speech, mobility or cognitive impairment.
  • Technology Center where seniors can experiment with the latest devices and cutting-edge technology for the hard of hearing.
  • Hearing Loss workshops, such as, "The Five Keys to Living Proactively with Hearing loss."

Remembering Mom

Mothers and daughters share a very special connection.  Remembering Mom: the Barbara Franklin Cancer Foundation is a Dallas-based support organization dedicated to assisting women who have lost their mothers through the initial grief process and beyond.  Members provide emotional support, offer grief support groups with professional therapists, hold an annual luncheon to celebrate the memories of mothers and sponsor an annual scholarship to aid young women who have lost their mothers.  Learn more about the group at www.rememberingmom.org

Senior Adult Services is a non-profit community organization serving residents 60 years of age or older in Addison, Carrollton, Coppell and Farmers Branch, TX. 

Service programs offered include:

  • home-delivered meals
  • transportation
  • minor home repairs (including changing hard to reach light bulbs and smoke detector batteries) and installation of home modifications such as grab bars in the bathroom
  • loan of medical equipment such as wheel chairs, commodes, walkers, toilet seat risers, etc (no hospital beds due to limited storage space)
  • caregiver support
  • Tel-A-Friend and Friendly Visitor programs
  • information and resource referrals


Hours are 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed noon to 1:00 p.m. daily for lunch.
