Small Busses and Vans
Many older adults no longer drive for medical reasons or no longer maintain a private auto. They still have transportation needs. Taxis may not be available in all areas or may not provide enough support. Services that offer transportation via vans and small busses will often take individuals to medical appointments and come back to pick them up. They may also accommodate walkers or wheel chairs easily. These services may be more patient with older adults and their special transportation needs than taxi services. When calling a service, know what date and approximately what time you will need transportation assistance and the to/from addresses. Ask for an estimate up front and ask how the service expects to be paid (cash or credit card, will they invoice you, etc?) These small transportation services are often an inexpensive alternative to ambulance transportation if there is no emergency situation involved. For example, if a patient must go from a hospital to a rehabilitation facility and cannot be transported safely by family, but there is no emergency medical treatment required during the journey, a private van or bus may be a convenient way to make the trip.
