Mental Health
Mental health or psychiatric hospitals are designed to help a patient with mental health difficulties stabilize to the point where he or she can return home or can be discharged to a less structured living arrangement than the hospital. Some in-patient stays can be very brief; this sometimes happens when a patient has not taken medication properly and recovers quickly once a normal medication schedule is re-established. Other stays can be lengthier if a patient is in a serious crisis and needs medical assistance so that the patient is not a danger to self or others and before the patient can resume his or her normal lifestyle. Some in-patient stays are designed to diagnose an individual who has developed symptoms of a mental illness; during those stays, doctors will attempt to diagnose and to start treatment so that the patient can begin a return to his or her normal lifestyle. Some mental health hospitals have "day programs" in which patients return to the hospital for therapy and treatment for a period each day, rather than being hospitalized as an in-patient. Some mental health hospitals often treatment, in-patient and/or out-patient, for chemical dependency (drug addiction or alcoholism). Some mental conditions that can sometimes require care from a mental health hospital include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, chemical dependency and dementia (Alzheimer's disease or other dementias).
