Rehabilitation hospitals
Rehabilitation hospitals specialize in helping patients to regain their strength and their physical and cognitive capabilities after experiencing a lengthy or debilitating illness or a serious injury or after undergoing a complex surgery. Examples of the services offered in a rehabilitation hospital include extensive physical therapy and strengthening after a hip or knee replacement, physical, speech and occupational therapies after a stroke or a head injury and physical and occupational therapies after serious burns to the body. Rehabilitation efforts are often progressive; they may begin in an acute care hospital, continue in the specialized rehabilitation hospital, and, upon improvement, may then continue further in a skilled nursing facility or in the patient's own home.
