Pet walkers and sitters will come to your home to walk your dog and to check on food and water for any household pets if you're away. This is great if you're going to be gone for a good portion of the day and your dog will need to be taken out and exercised while you're gone, or if you're a little under the weather and can't get out yourself. Pet sitters also can care for your pet while you're out of town for a few days, or if you are hospitalized for a brief stay. Some sitters/walkers will pick up dog food or pet medicines for you and will even drive your pet to the veterinarian and home again for you. If you can't always be home, if your pet needs more exercise than you do, or if you need assistance in getting your pet to its vet appointments, a pet sitter/walker service may be just the answer. When considering using a service for the first time, ask if the sitter is experienced and if the service is bonded and insured. Schedule an initial visit to see if your pet and the sitter get along well and to discuss your pet's needs and routines with the sitter. Ask about the service's fees and when and how the service will need to be paid. Services may ask for payment before they begin to work with you, or they may ask that you arrange to pay them at the time of service (by leaving a check, arranging for payment by credit card, etc.). Naturally, you will have to make arrangements with the pet sitter for the sitter/walker to have secure access to your home and pet when you are away; ask the service how this will be handled. You can contract with a pet sitter/walker service for someone to check on your pets on a regular schedule (for example, every day at lunch time) or only when you need them.
