General Practitioners

Doctors who are general practitioners treat a variety of patients of all ages, both male and female, for all types of illnesses and injuries. A general practitioner often serves as a patient's primary care physician or family physician. General practitioners may refer patients to medical specialists as needed and then continue to see and treat the patient for other health concerns which the medical specialist does not address. A general practitioner is often the doctor whom a patient sees most regularly over time and who will coordinate all the care needs the patient may have. Other health care providers who see the patient for special needs send reports back to the referring general practitioner so that he or she understands all the medical concerns and treatments for a specific patient. The general practitioner may have the best overall perspective on the individual patient and is usually the doctor to whom the patient brings any new medical concern.
